Mlevu and Asenze were darted and loaded into their crates around 3pm and left the Malilangwe Trust just before 6pm on 5th of September 2024. They were monitored with cameras inside the crates throughout their trip. The two rhino bulls were accompanied by a convoy of vets, ecologists, scouts, traditional and local leaders and travelled through the night, arriving at Sanctuary 2 at around 10am the following day. Needless to say it was a long 24 hours!
The road
The rhinos and their convoy travelled over 700 kilometres to reach the sanctuary, crossing districts and provinces and dodging a number of potholes along the way!
Getting closer
As the rhinos got closer to sanctuary 2, the rhinos as well as the entire convoy accompanying them received a warm welcome from school children and community members!
The arrival
Over 20 hours after being darted and sedated at the Malilangwe Trust, the rhinos were released into their habituation boma at sanctuary 2, in the presence of community leaders and chiefs, scouts and Imvelo Safari Lodges guests.
