Rhinos are arriving at our second community rhino sanctuary!

In September 2024, the new Mlevu Sanctuary is welcoming two rhinos of its own!

The arrival of Thuza and Kusasa at our first community rhino sanctuary at Ngamo in May 2022 sparked the interest of other communities along Hwange's southern boundary.

Three communities amalgamated their land adjacent to the Park boundary and allocated it to rhino conservation, creating the second community rhino sanctuary - the "Mlevu Rhino Sanctuary".

We are excited to be building on CRCI's successes to date with the expansion of the Initiative...and the arrival of two new rhinos! Read more about our work and its impacts so far  here

As part of the establishment of the Mlevu Rhino Sanctuary, a new batch of scouts has been recruited and trained, high-tech wildlife-proof fencing has been erected, boreholes have been drilled and equipped, a scouts' base has been set-up (barracks, canteen, operations room) and scrub clearing has opened up even more grazing land for rhino.

We are honoured to have the expert team of ecologists at the Malilangwe Trust to champion the translocation of these magnificent animals to the newly established Mlevu Sanctuary.

Be part of the translocation efforts

As we continue sharing up-to-date details on this historical move, we invite you to be a part of the rhinos' journey and their new lives at Mlevu Sanctuary!

Support the translocation by contributing to:

* Scrub and road clearing to allow vehicles to access the new sanctuary

*Setting-up a habituation zone for when the rhino first arrive

* Food and accommodation for a large convoy of National Park representatives, vets, ecologists, Police, scouts, traditional leaders and rural district councillors

* Veterinary services and consultations

* Rhino capture and dehorning

* Transport and mileage for the rhino translocation

*Help us best protect and care for these rhinos once they are at Mlevu Sanctuary and it is fully operational
